Marin Firefighters Fill the Boot for MDA
Marin Professional Firefighters Local 1775 conducted a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) April 2009, raising $30,000 in six hours through a "Fill The Boot" campaign.
Local 1775 kicked off the fund drive at the end of April and 65 members canvassed seven locations in Marin County to raise money for MDA.
Led by MDA representatives Leslie Uptain and Odette Lepe along with Local 1775's MDA Chairperson and Coordinator Breanna Buchanan, firefighters hit the streets, waiting at stoplights to collect donations from passersby.
Legislation backed by California Professional Firefighters (CPF) signed in 2007 specifically protects the right of locals to conduct Fill the Boot drives.
Six hours later, Local 1775 had raised an unbelievable $30,000, which will help support MDA in the fight against neuromuscular disease.
"I can't wait until next year. We'll even do better," Buchanan said.
Local 1775 members from Larkspur, San Rafael, Mill Valley, Novato, Marinwood, Southern Marin, Corte Madera, Ross, Ross Valley and Tiburon came together as a team to raise money and awareness for MDA, proving once again to be heroes to local families living with neuromuscular disease in the Bay Area.
Ross Valley earned the title of the top performing fire fighter/fundraisers, raising $8,869! MDA Coordinator Rick Marshall motivated members to collect for MDA. Fire fighter Matt White filled his boot and personally raised more than $1,200.
Southern Marin fire fighters -- joined by fellow fire fighter Al Duncan of Presidio Fire -- raised $5,190. MDA Coordinator Phil Tripp from Novato, John Bagala from Marinwood and local fire fighters raised $4, 272.
Mill Valley raised $3, 237 with Pete Romo raising his boot as coordinator.
Matt Windrem, MDA coordinator, and fire fighters from San Rafael raised $3,208.
Dennis Rutkowski of Larkspur and Corte Madera members raised $2, 495. Tiburon fire fighters and Sloane Valentino raised $2,495 during Opening Day on the Bay. Local 1775 President Bob Braire supported the Marin Fill-the-Boot campaign, pounding the pavement for MDA with Breanna Buchanan, coordinator for the event and the responsible for the successful day. Her commitment drove the fire fighters to a phenomenal victory in Marin County.
